What About Protein Bars?

  • In all (or nearly all) protein bar manufacturing processes the bar itself is baked in order to mold it into shape and set the ingredients for packaging. This baking process involves heat, in many cases very high heat which quickly breaks down the amino acids in the protein you are eating from those bars. This means that when you are consuming your delicious and nutritious protein bar with 10, 20, 30+ grams of protein you are getting all the calories of a gram of protein but nearly none of its muscle building/repairing benefits. This breakdown/degradation can also happen if you were to put protein powder in very hot liquid or freshly made oatmeal, etc. I always allow my oats to cool slightly before adding my protein to them for this reason.

Many protein bars are made to be very healthy, natural ingredients, sticking to low carb, high fiber etc. this is ALL great but if you are counting on getting in that 20-30g protein, you’re better off drinking it in a shake form or eating some chicken/beef/fish/etc. in my opinion.

I have read studies that proved protein break down from high heat, but my opinion on the protein bars is purely my own, based on the info from others in that industry, and the sound reasoning and logic that bars are heated, and high heat destroys protein, especially delicate protein powders which are already processed out of their natural form.

My $0.02, take it or leave it!
